At the Stratton Parish Council Meeting on the 20th March, the results of the recent speed traffic analysis were presented.  The analysis was undertaken between 5th and 11th February, 2018(dates inclusive) and the location was across the road close to John Lock’s Cottage and Wrackle Close and both this year’s and last year’s results were measured at the same location.  Traffic speeds were measured travelling from both east to west – towards Dorchester – and the west to east – towards Yeovil.  The traffic survey took place shortly after the 30mph roundels were painted on the road and on this occasion the speed of the traffic was measured by a camera and not by the more noticeable strips across the road method.

Stratton Parish Council is very pleased to be able to announce that there has been a very significant reduction in the speed of vehicles compared to the traffic survey that took place at roughly the same time last year.

Results for 2018

Vehicles travelling west to east:-

99.1% of vehicles (2490) were within the 30mph limit. Of these, 1613 drove at less than 20mph.

0.9% were over 30mph, a total of 22 vehicles.

Vehicles travelling east to west:-

96.8% were within the 30mph limit (2028) and of these, 1139 travelled at less than 20mph.

3.2% were found to be travelling at over 30mph, a total of 66 vehicles.

Results for 2017

Vehicles travelling from west to east:-

78.8% of vehicles (2166) were within the 30mph limit, with 14.8% of this total (407) travelling at less than 20mph.

21.2% (581) vehicles were recorded as travelling at more than 30mph.

Vehicles travelling east to west:-

73.5% of vehicles travelled within the 30mph speed limit (1425) with 15% of these (291) at less than 20mph.

26.5% – 513 vehicles – travelled at more than 30mph.

Whilst these figures are extremely encouraging, SPC along with all parish residents need to continue to be vigilant with regard to vehicles speeding through the village and the Council is considering still more options and opportunities to promote road safety throughout the parish.

Stratton Parish Council has now received, from Highways, a copy of the criteria for any deployment of Speed Indicator Devices (SID’s) which show that Stratton is ineligible.
