In 2015, the Parish Council agreed that it would provide a memorial at this year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony to recognise the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War (World War I) in 1918.

Based on a suggestion proposed to the Parish Council by Colin Jackson, which came originally from an unknown villager, work has been undertaken to provide a permanent memorial.

A Wreath Railing is to be installed close to the current cenotaph outside the Church.

The basic design comprises a length of railing which will include four hanging arms on which wreaths can be properly displayed. A metal poppy has been included, along with a wooden commemorative plaque.

Work on the actual memorial is now completed and work on erecting the railings will take place very shortly, prior to the 11th November Remembrance Day ceremony.

It is hoped that the railing memorial will remind people of all those who gave their lives in WW1, serve as a demonstration of the esteem in which we hold them and as a reminder of their sacrifice, not only for ourselves, but for generations to come.

The cost of the project is being met by the Parish Council, which includes a grant from the Chairman’s Fund at West Dorset District Council for projects celebrating the end of the Great War.
