The National Tribute to recognise the 100th year since the end of the Great War

(World War I).

With the kind permission of Wrackleford Estates and Wrackleford Farms, a ‘Beacon of Light’ will be lit on Grimstone Down (close to The Clumps) on 11th November 2018, as part of the ‘National Beacon of Light’ event being organised by Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster of Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute.

Beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories to celebrate the event, and in part to counter the words spoken on 3rd August 1914, by Britain’s Foreign Minister, Sir Edward Grey, when he remarked on the outbreak of war, that “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”.

Stratton Parish Council has signed up to take part in this National event, and the Beacon of Light will be lit at 7:00 pm on Sunday 11th November.

Depending on weather conditions it is usually possible, from the beacon site on Grimstone Down, to see when lit, three or four other Beacons around West Dorset.

Anyone can attend the lighting of the Beacon but do so at their own risk. With the time of day and the time of year, anyone going up to the Beacon will need to take great care, wear appropriate wet weather clothing, strong walking shoes or boots, and have a torch or some other method of lighting the way over the rough track.

Permission has been given for anyone attending the event to go by car as far as Grimstone Dairy where parking is available, prior to walking up the hill to the Beacon point. For those who find the walk up the hill too difficult, one, if not two vehicles, with a covered back, will be available, between 6.00-6.45pm, to transport people to the top.

The Beacon will be lit at 7:00 pm so please ensure you leave plenty of time to arrive at the site in time.

Be careful – Be safe
