Stratton Parish Council has raised concerns with Dorset Highways regarding the speed of traffic on the A37 through Grimstone.
The Parish Council has been advised that the 30mph speed limit at Grimstone is by virtue of street lighting and repeater signs and painted roundels are not permitted. However, as Dorset Road Safe enforce the 30mph speed limit, Highways are able to install two signs (one in each direction) that combine a camera image with a ‘30’ roundel within the 30mph limit.
Highways will also consider installing new SLOW and yellow bar markings on the southbound approach and refreshing the existing markings on the northbound approach. There are already SLOW and yellow bar markings in advance of the A356 junction and it would be unusual to have two sets of these markings relatively close to one another but it will be considered. Highways will confirm to the Parish Council any work ordered after visiting the site in the next few weeks.

Gateway features – such as signs that say ‘Please Drive Carefully Through Our Village’ – are a further option but Highways do not have any funding available to provide them. However, Dorset Highway’s sign shop are able to assist in assessing whether suitable sites are available and will quote for the work.
Stratton Parish Council will now be asking the sign shop for such costs and for the identification of suitable sites for gateway signs for both Grimstone and Stratton Village. The cost of these items will be added to the Planning Gain Wish List for consideration.
Wheelie bin stickers with 30mph speed roundels and ‘Drive Safely’ slogans are currently being distributed and every house/establishment that places rubbish and recycling bins out on the roads through both Stratton Village and Grimstone, have already been visited or will be in the very near future.
