It has been brought to the attention of Stratton Parish Council that there have been several instances of dog fouling in the village where dog faeces have been ‘deposited’ and not removed. This is thoroughly disagreeable as well as being anti-social and against the law; dog faeces can carry diseases such as toxocariasis which has been known to cause blindness, especially in young children.

Dorset Council Dog related Public Spaces Protection Order was made on 23 October 2020. It came into effect on 1 January 2021 and will last 3 years. Anyone who fails to clear up after their dog can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100. If the case goes to court this could cost the owner or person in charge of the animal up to £1,000. The law states that being unaware a dog has fouled or not having a suitable bag is not a reasonable excuse.

By law, a dog should wear a collar with a tag bearing the owner’s name and address. It is advised that consideration is given to include an up to date mobile phone number. From 6 April 2016 it is compulsory for all dogs to have a microchip fitted with their owner’s details. This has particularly occurred in areas that are private, but accessible, and where children play.

Whilst it is appreciated that most dog owners are responsible, those who are not and do not clean up after their pets are causing offence to our residents and a health risk to our children.
